“Abby?” I say louder.
“Yeah?”
“Can we talk in a second?”
Abby pulls into a parking space, and Royce flies out of the car to find his friends. I slide out of the car and shut the door too softly, so I had to shut it again. She looks at me for a moment, then shuts her own door.
“Okay. What do you need? Advice? Money-“
“I think I like someone,” I blurt out, immediately regretting it. For possibly the first time ever, my sister is speechless. Her jaw drops, and I awkwardly stand in front of her until she shakes her head.
“Come again?”
“I-“
“I thought you couldn’t, y’know, feel like that…”
“I thought so, too.” Maybe I’m just making the feeling up. I mean, I wouldn’t know, would I?
“Was it because I brought up Valentine’s Day to you? Maybe that stuck in your head or something.”
“I don’t know. But, just don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“Okay,” she says, but then she quickly adds, “Not even Roy? I mean… he’ll find out anyway, y’know, so do you think it’ll be safer just to tell him?”
“No, we’re just going to lie low for a bit. I’ll just keep it off my mind, and you keep it off yours, alright?”
“Alright.”
